This degree has been a key part of my life for the last three years and as I approach the end I can't help but look back at all of my achievements for the duration of the program. This blog holds all of course work, reflection and thoughts on the RMIT Information and Knowledge Management Program.
All posts can be accessed through the use of the links below by selecting the correct semester and then the class which you would like to view the course work for. I have not done a complete reflection on each individual class but for each semester instead. I have detailed my goals for each semester, my grades (high, low, average) and a brief description of what I thought of the classes for that semester.
Year 1
My first year at university was hard, I was not used to all of the different changes in learning style to that of High School and just finding my way around all of the buildings and class rooms.
Semester 1
Semester 2
Year 2
In my second year at RMIT I was much more confident at my ability to find my way around the different classes and to pass all of my classes. As for most students my second year involved more play and less study as I was more relaxed and had made friends in my first year. This did not stop my from acheiving my goals and surviving another year of university.
Semester 1
Semester 2
Year 3
My third and final year has been a difficult one to complete. I have been finding it hard to keep motivated to complete work to my usual standard and attend classes. However, I still managed to receive high grades for my first semester of my last year and have yet to finish my final Semester.
Semester 1
Semester 2
After much thought and consideration I have decided that I would like to pursue further study once I have completed my degree. Depending on what I am offered next year I may pursue my honours for this program or delve into a Diploma of Education at Monash University. I feel that this will improve my employability in the future and even though this degree has been hard at times I do enjoy to learn and study.
Please enjoy browseing through and feel free to comment.

The Intelligent Organisation
For the Intelligent Organisation I completed the following assignments:
Assignment 1
Assignment 2
Reflections
These assignments were to teach me about the organisation of information in a business setting, preparing me for the business world and showing me some of the other avenues I could take in my career. This was a great course to give me information on training staff and what people need from their training sessions. I found through this course that people at my previous work place were not happy with the amount of training that they had received and that it had not been delivered in a style that was very beneficial to their learning experience.
I also had a look into some of the new technologies that were coming out at the time, namely the iphone which is very popular now. This assignment was done as a group assignment which once again added to my team management skills and work distribution. I also had to complete a presentation again, which added to my confidence in public speaking, and it was interesting to see what the other groups had to say.
For this course I received a DI.

Professional Practise
This is the class that I am writing this blog for, so I can't really link many assignments for the class. This first assignment for the class was to write job letters and resumes. I found this to be an interesting part of the course; as we are getting to the end of our degree and most of the students will be moving out into the work force, knowledge of applying and finding work can be invaluable. As I have already found a position in a library local to my home I did not find this to be as important to me as it might be for some. I also had already completed a course, "Careers that work" which had already covered the basics of resume and letter writing as well as practise concerning the interview process.
What I found most interesting about this assignment was the future career plan. It got me thinking about where I am heading and what I want to do after university. I had not thought about this is great length before, this project forced me to map out my plans and to really think about where I wanted to be in 5 years.
The next was to set up a presentation done by a speaker from outside of the RMIT school. This was relitivly easy as we had a member in our group who had a contact that would be able to speak on a relivant topic "copy right". We organised a room and refreashments for the speaker/guests and it all ran very smoothly.
The last assignment is this blog. I have found it to be an interesting and sometimes tedious task to go back over classes that I never wanted to think about again (Relational Database Design and Development) and classes that I enjoyed and got a lot out of (Industry Application Project). During this experience I have found that I have changed a lot since I first started this program in 2007. I have grown, learnt and experienceed much during this program and this assignment has helped me to remember and given me a chance to reflect.

Research Project
For Research Project it involves the creation of one major assignment throughout the duration of the semester. For this assignment I found it to be like writing a minor thesis. I thought that when I first started to do my research and write the research paper that I would not be able to make it to the 6000 word limit, by the time it came to hand in my finished paper I found that I had gone over the word limit by 1000 words and still had more I could write about. I ahd to cut myself short in the end to be able to hand it in on time and so that it did not become a 10,000 word research paper.
This class has taught me that you never know what may happen when writing a research paper, I was scared that I would not have enough to write about when I first started but in the end it turned out that the oppisite happened. I also thought in the begining that I would find the work to be boring and tedious, when in fact I enjoyed the research and would happily continue with my reading and findings. From this class it has helped me in thinking about ideas for research for if I continue on to do honours and of research that I might consider doing in my own time. At the begining of my degree I would not have been able to complete a task this big, I was not ready and would have had no idea where to start or what to write, now I ahve had a lot of practise and can approach such a task with confidence.

Accounting
As accounting is one of the business courses, and they rely more on the results from exams and not assignments I only have one assignment for this class. The other forms of assessment are a mid semester test, completed with a 15/20 and the final exam.

Records Management and Archive Administration
For this class I had to complete 4 different assessment tasks, they were a short essay on what a record is, a report on the Water Safety Corporation, a group assignment creating an archival management plan, and a presentation on the plan.
Tihsi class helped me with remembering what I had learnt in other classes regarding records and the need for a correct archiving and records management system. The creation of a records and archival management plan was something entirly new to me. I had never thad to create one before and I think that it is a very important part of the course. Records and information managment is what this program is about and all students should be able to tell which records are vital to the companies survival and how all records should be managed on a day to day basis and during a disaster.
The lecture slides and assignment sheets made it easier to figure out the layout for the records management and disaster recovery plan. The Classes were a bit long, three hours was not needed to cover all of the material and there was some over lap in the content of some lectures from previous courses, such as content management and knowledge management technologies.
Overall the most interesting and important parts from this course was learning how to create a disaster recovery plan and discover the vital records within a company.
I recieved a HD for this course.

3 week Industrial Placement 2
This was my second industrial placement which was at the Casey-Cardinia Library Corporation. I completed this placement over the course of the semester as I could not do it during the university holidays. This course was a great introduction to the world of the public library. As my first placement was in a high school library it was a very different setting than a public library in the outer suburbs.
I had Marika as my supervisor, she was very helpful in telling me about the industry and all of the extra services that the casey-cardinia library corporation provides to their local community.
The assignments for this course helped me to gain a better insight into the business/library that i was working for. It allowed me to see what technology they use for communication and who is in charge of the corporation. The diary was a good way to check on my progress and helped with looking back at my achievements during my time with the Casey-Cardinia Library Corporation as was the professional development plan. The plan ensured that I met all of my learning goals and and stayed focused during my time at placement.
For this course there was the following assignments:

Industry Application Project
This course included one assignment for the whole semester. The assignment was a project on the Rmit BP140 Blackboard which is in serious need of redevelopment. With this assignment it was hoped that some changes could be made and the blackboard would be updated. I was in a group of five other members for this assignment as the project was rather large.
The assignment for this course was submitted in three parts, the proposal of the project, the report on the project/outcomes and such and individual reflections on the process and group partisipation.
I found this course to be an interesting process, the group had to have meetings as if it was a business and everyone had to do their equal parts. This course expanded on my knowledge of report writing and working in a team environment as well as my understanding of the black board tachnology.
I received a DI for this course.

Desktop Publishing
Desktop Publishing had one major assignment that had to be handed in at the end of the semester and worked on in class as well as a presentation. It involved the following parts
Flyer
Letterhead
With Compliments slip
Postcard
Envelope
Business Card
Fax Cover
Newspaper Ad
Brochure
Multi page booklet
Presentation
I really enjoyed completing the work for this class, not only was I able to enhance my computer skills, I was able to create something and use my imagination. Unfortunately I am not a very creative person, and I usually prefer to colour between the lines, so this lost marks on my assignment because of this let down.
I also had some problems in finishing the work as I did not have the necessary software (Microsoft Publisher) on my laptop, thus forcing me to create all of my assignments at uni. I found that the text books were unnecessary, if I paid attention in class and made sure to go over the lecture slides I did not even need to look at the text books.
This was a great course to do for anyone who wanted to expand on their Microsoft Publisher skills. I am not sure when I may be needing to use Publisher again, but it is nice to know that when I do, I will not have to worry about learning how to use it.
I received a CREDIT for this course.

3 week Industrial Placement 1
I attended my first three week industrial placement at the Castlemaine Secondary College Library. I did this in a three week block during the holidays. I found it to be a very enjoyable experience and I made many good friends there from the school library community. The assignments helped to give me a view of the library community and where the secondary school library fit into the school system. I was also able to view the up and coming technologies to be used in the school libraries.
Judith was very helpful during my time at the Castlemaine Secondary College Library and gave me a great overview of the school library and the professional development that she partisipates in with other school librarians.
For my first industrial placement I completed the following assignments;

Knowledge Management Environments 2
For this course I was involved in 2 group assignments and 1 individual assignment. One of the group assignments involved creating a wiki for the group to use for collaboration, the other was to follow a blog relating to knowledge management and report on it.
This was a very interesting course, not only did we have more of a chance to investigate something that interested us as individuals but we also got to create and monitor a wiki. I worked together with Shannon Bell to monitor a wiki that was written by one of Shannon's colleagues that was interested in web 2.0 and many other new technologies that are coming into play concerning libraries.
This was a great way for me to expand on my knowledge of collaborative technologies and of the goings on of the library industry.

Business Anaylsis
This class had very standard assignments. Two Individual and one group. Plus homework pieces. I found that this class had some relevant topics to cover and was interesting to a degree, but it was taught in a way that made it somewhat confusing. I found it hard to keep up with this class and I still do not really understand the fishbone diagrams.
I was lucky to have some friends to work through the assignments with and to explain the concepts again to me otherwise I think I would have only achieved a PASS. The classes were at a late time of day for this course as well, as it was catering for the part-time students. I found this hard to deal with as it meant I was getting home very late at night, too tired to go over the course work that we had done that day.

Careers that work
In this course I had to research the future prospects in my career area of Information and Knowledge Management. I also had to apply for a vacant position which suited my degree. I found this to be a great way to add to my learning experience.
In the course there was no one I knew, forcing me to make other friends and branching out into the RMIT student community. I had never had much experience in interviewing and writing job applications, so this course was a great way to start my learning, and give me some great hints for interviewing and applying.

Information Organisation in libraries
For this course there were 3 assignments. A catalogue evaluation, a bibliography of some items given in class and a case study. This course was perfect for anyone wanting to work in a library. Even though I do not see myself as a cataloguer, I still found it extremley interesting and important. This course has helped me to learn the dewy decimal system, which is very important for working in a library, public or otherwise.
Sue was a great teacher, she was easy to talk to and was willing to help with any problems you might have been having with the work. She understood that it can be hard to get your head around. I had a great time in this class and even though I only received a CREDIT I feel like I learnt a lot about the library and classification of items.

Content Management
This class was very similar to Relational Database Design and Development and Knowledge Management Technologies. We had to create a database, but this time it was using DB Textworks and write a users manual. The database file is in a zip file to compress the size.
This was a great way to follow up Relational Database Design and Development as it still had databases in mind. It was a way of approaching a database from a different perspective and it was interesting to compare the two different types of databases. Looking at the different vocabularies and the ways to control and sort them I found to be very important to the type of work I am doing now. When completing searches and finding material it is important to know what words to use when searching what headings to look under.

Relational Database Design and Development
Relational Database Design and Development was mainly group work. We had to create and relational database, plus report on it and cover the design process. At the end we created a users manual individually.
This was a very hard course to learn in. The content was relevant and I found it interesting to create the database and users manual, but the course was badly structured and there was not enough hands on practise with the creation of the database for it to be an affective learning environment.
I feel that I would not have passed this course had it not been for the fact that I had a friend who was familiar with the program and grasped the concepts being presented easily.

This class had assignments all over the place and it is hard to arrange them. There were short assignments of 100 words on a topic each week, some I wrote onto my computer, some I uploaded straight to the discussion board and do not have a copy of my post. We also had to add to a website given to us. This will be added as a zip file.
This class was a great way to learn about creating web sites and pages.I had never had to create a website before, and HTML was very new to me. It was very confusing at first, all of the different symbols and rules to use when creating the document. Once I started to understand the basics though the rest started to make more sense.
Using front page made the process much easier, but I feel that I should practise more of my HTML coding as it is still used on some blogs when posting. I am sure that I will find the HTML coding useful at some point during my career.

Investigations and Intelligence
This class focused its assignments around the use of collaborative technologies and information retrieval. There was 3 major parts for assessment in this course. An Individual report, mine being on 'Legal issues associated with the use of collaborative knowledge tools such as wiki software.', a group report which involved surveying the public on an issue and a presentation on the results of the survey.
This was an interesting class as it allowed me to test me information gathering skills in a group setting. We had some trouble in our group. Two of our team members did not get their work done on time, which made it hard for everyone else to complete their work.
I recieved a DI for this class, which I was happy with.

Introduction to Organisational Behaviour
For this class there was a lot of assignments and out of class work to complete. With a Learning contract there was also the weekly tasks which changed each week thus making it hard to keep track of them. One week my group may have done minutes and the next we may have been organising the agenda and activity.
The learning contract was my first ever major assignment that I had to submit for a university class. I found it to be frightening and exciting. It seemed like a huge amount of work at the time, but I felt like I had achieved a lot once I had finished it. I was always nervous when going to this class each week, I had to speak out during class and as I am not a very good public speaker it made me very uncomfortable. Even though it was scary at the time, looking back I can see that it was a very good class to start off my university degree with, it forced to me get to know other students, to make friends and involve me in the university learning style.
What I found to be good with this class was that students were able to interact with other students outside of the degree they were studying. Most of the classes for Information and Knowledge Management are either classes with only IKM students or do not promote group study and teams (Business Stats, Marcoeconomics, etc)
The class was also set up like a business, promoting maturity and cooperation between students. This was a great class for my first year at University.
I recieved a DI for this class

For this class I did a group assignment on a presentation about wiki's. I also had to complete reflections throughout the course. As this was one of the courses from earlier on in my degree, looking back now I can see that the assignments were very easy, and made so that we would not have much trouble passing if we did the work. For this class as well believe we also had to complete an in class test on the weekly reading we were meant to do and the terms/definitions we were learning in class.
This was a great introduction to the world of information and knowledge management. It gave me the basis concepts and information retrieval skills that I would need to complete the rest of my education as well as in my job as a librarian.
The assignment was a great way to start getting me interested in the technologies just starting to be used in businesses and libraries today as well as giving me a chance to practise my referencing, which I used to have a lot of trouble with.
I received a DI for this course.

Marketing
For Marketing I did not have many assignments to complete. Most of the course was done through the use of online tests and the end of year exam. We did however have to complete a short case studies every 2 weeks, at the end of the semester these all came together to create a larger case study, I do not have part one.
This class I do not see myself using much in my career. Library marketing is not done all that much, and it is usually done by someone who is in the marketing industry, not an information specialist. It was an interesting class, though I found it a little nerve racking at first. The classes/lectures were very big and I did not know many people when I first started. I also had trouble completing some of the online tasks as I did not yet have the internet at home. It was an interesting choice of subject for first semester, first year for my course I felt. I think it would be better as an elective.
For this course I received a CREDIT.

Business Computing 1
For Business Computing, which was in my first year, first semester I had to complete a number of assignments. They involved writing several reports and and creating a database in Microsoft Excel. I have provided a link to each completed assignment below, I will be doing this for all my completed courses that have assignments to hand in. Unfortunately I am missing one of the assignments for this class as it was a pair assignment and my partner was in possession of the excel database and has since left the program.
This course was a great basis to start off my computer based learning. As I alredy had the basics, this course enabled me to refresh my memory of them all aswell as show me things I had never seen before on the programs. The use of excel was very helpful, as I had had no reason to really use excel in any of my previous learning this gave me a great starting point and knowledge base to get to know this software. I now feel confident when using excel.
This course was also a good starting point for learning to write business reports. It was my first encounter with this type of writing style and I think that the business computing class presented it well and in an easy to understand manner.
For this course I recieved a CREDIT
Assignment 1
This Assignment was to help me in learning to write business reports. Looking back at it now, I was not the best at this when I first started.
Assignment 2
This assignment was more of a case study.
As I said I am missing my Database, these were the only assignments to be completed for Business Computing.

Year 3: Semester 2
For my 3rd Year 2nd Semester I am completing my final four courses for the degree. Those four courses are:
For Accounting I have found that completing the assignments do the class test have really helped with my understanding of the course and it's goals. I received high marks for my in class test and understand all of the concept being presented in the lectures. I feel I will do well on the exam for this class.
This is my second attempt at completing the Macroeconomics course. This time I am finding it easier to understand the equation and concepts behind the classes. I have been receiving higher marks on the in class tests than the last time, and I am feeling more confident about my successful completion of this course.
Research Project I am finding more difficult, there is a lot of information to disseminate and assemble and not much time to do it. I also have to do an oral presentation at the end of the course which I am still not comfortable with even after all of the ones I have had to do for the duration of the degree. My research is almost complete, once I have the replies to the survey I will be able to finish it.
Professional Practise is a coming together of all of my years of study and presenting it for all to see. I have chosen to present my work and reflections by the use of a blog which will be presented in the final class for grading by my peers and teachers. Once again, I have found throughout my years of study that I will never be happy with public speaking and will continue to avoid it at all costs.

Year 3: Semester 1
For my final year in my 1st semester I completed four subjects. They were:
I achieved the highest scores in these classes than I have ever before, I was very surprised by this as these classes were some of the hardest I have had to complete for the duration of my program.
In Commercial Law I had to study for the tests and the exam. I did better than I had anticipated in this class, achieving a HD. What helped me the most in this class was the lecturers, Con. He explained all of the concepts in an easy to understand manner and with many examples.
For this class, because I found it interesting and useful it was easy to remember.
Japanese 1 was one of my last student electives. I have always been interested in Japan and this course was very interesting for me and one of the courses that I have always wanted to do. I received a HD in this class as I had previously learnt some basic Japanese from books and Japanese Television. This class helped me to further my skills and understanding of the language and give me a starting point for further self study.
Industry Application Project was a individual assignment that I had the chance to complete as a group with John, Chris, Julia and Shannon. Our assignment was based on the upgrade of the BP 140 Blackboard as it is in need or a reform and upgrade. This assignment was to be completed for the duration of the semester. We worked well as a group and received high marks for our efforts, though not much has changed on the BP140 Blackboard site.
Records Management and Archive Administration was another of my electives. I found this class to be a waste of time and I did not learn much for the duration of the course as it seemed that most of it had already been covered in other classes throughout the program. I did well in this class as I had already covered most of the class topics previously. One of the useful parts of this class was learning how to create a disaster recovery plan, it is always good to know what is important and to ensure that all vital records are safe in case of a disaster.
I did my second set of my 3 week industrial placement during this semester. It was completed a little differently to the first as I did it over the semester 1 day per week and it was at Casey-Cardinia Library Corporation. As it was a public library and not a school one the environment was very different. There was also many more people working there and I did not make as many close friends during my time there. It was not as good for networking.

Year 2: Semester 2
For the 2nd Semester of my 2nd Year of the Bachelor of Business: Information and Knowledge Management course I completed more classes than in the previous semesters. I completed the following:
Desktop Publishing was one of my electives. It was in interesting course, and I did end up learning many things about Microsoft publisher for the duration of the course. I did not receive very high marks in this course however, as I am not very creative or artistic and found it hard to come up with designs for this assignments (creating posters and brochures). What I did find though was that I am very good at using the software and if I ever need to fix something using Microsoft publisher for someone or have a need to create advertising for work I will be able to do it with ease if I have a little creative input from my colleagues.
Knowledge Management Environments 2 involved the creation of a collaboration wiki in groups for a organisation. I worked with Aida, Julia and Shannon for this assignment. It was really interesting to do as we found out that if people do not use the wiki for collaboration and just keep their ideas to themselves it is not a very useful tool. Wikis are only good if they are used in the right way and that the users know how to utilize the wiki. Collaboration tools are becoming very important in the work place, and after doing this class I have found that I am using these tools more and more in the workplace, it was a very relevant and interesting class.
Prices and Markets was very much like Macroeconomics. Though I found it to be easier to understand the concepts presented in this class compared to Macro. I passed this class easily and did not have any major problems with it. What I found made the difference was having the past exams to go over before my final exam. It made it so I was aware of what kind of questions to expect on the exam. The head lecturer of this class was lovely and very helpful in explaining the terms and equations used. I managed to just get through this course with a PASS.
Careers that work was a extra subject that I did over the winter break to make space to redo Macroeconomic in my last year. I found it to be an interesting class for information on applying for jobs, graduate positions and interviewing. It was a 3 day intensive course and I was surprised that no one else from the information and knowledge management course were not doing it.
My first 3 week industrial placement was at Castlemaine Secondary College Library. I really enjoyed this experience and I now understand how important it is to complete the industry placements as it help with networking and future roles. After completing my placement at Castlemaine Secondary College Library I have decided that later in my career I would like to pursue a position in a School Library in a rural area of Australia. It would be a nice way to finish off my career.
